Quality of Life
Canada consistently ranks among the world's most liveable countries, offering universal healthcare, high-quality public education, clean cities, and extraordinary natural landscapes. Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal are world-class multicultural metros. The country is politically stable, with a strong rule of law and one of the most welcoming immigration policies of any developed nation. Winters are severe in most of the country; British Columbia's coast is notably milder.
Canada has very low rates of violent crime by G7 standards. Cities are generally safe, including after dark in most districts. Petty crime and property crime exist in urban centres but serious violent crime is rare.
Universal single-payer healthcare (provincial systems) covers all residents at no direct cost. Wait times for specialist care and elective procedures can be long. Private supplemental insurance covers dental, vision, and prescription drugs.
Public Kβ12 education is universally funded and of high quality. Universities such as University of Toronto, McGill, UBC, and Waterloo rank globally and have strong research output. Tuition is significantly lower than the US for domestic students.
Federal income tax up to 33%; provincial tax adds 8β21%. Combined top marginal rates reach 53% in Ontario and Quebec. Capital gains are 50% included in income (effective rate ~27% federally). No wealth tax. Tax treaties with most major nations.
Work Permits
Canada has one of the world's most structured and welcoming temporary work permit systems. Permits are tied to specific employers (LMIA-required) or are open (LMIA-exempt). International graduates and skilled workers benefit from streamlined pathways. Intracompany transferees and US/Mexico nationals benefit from CUSMA (successor to NAFTA) provisions.
LMIA-Based Work Permit
Employer must obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment proving no qualified Canadian candidate is available. Standard route for most employer-sponsored positions.
CUSMA (formerly NAFTA) Work Permit
Expedited work authorisation for US and Mexican nationals in specific professional categories (over 60 professions). No LMIA required, processed at the port of entry.
Intracompany Transfer (ICT)
For executives, senior managers, and specialised knowledge workers transferring from a related foreign entity. Initial permit up to 3 years; extendable.
Start-Up Visa Work Permit
Bridging work permit for Start-Up Visa applicants while permanent residency is processed. Requires commitment from designated VC, angel group, or business incubator.
Skills-Based Migration
Express Entry is Canada's flagship immigration system, managing applications for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class. Candidates are scored on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and the top-ranked are invited in regular draws. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) offer additional pathways aligned with each province's economic needs.
- Age (younger = more points)
- Education (foreign credentials assessed by ECA)
- Language proficiency (IELTS/CELPIP)
- Canadian work experience
- Job offer (adds significant CRS points)
- Provincial nomination (adds 600 CRS points β near-certain draw)
Economic Residency & Migration Programmes
Canada does not have a conventional investor visa in the traditional sense β the Federal Immigrant Investor Program was discontinued. However, several provincial business immigration streams and the Start-Up Visa provide routes for entrepreneurs and investors. Quebec has its own separate investor and entrepreneur streams.
Economic Opportunities
Canada is a G7 economy with a GDP of approximately CAD 3 trillion. It is resource-rich (oil, gas, minerals, timber) and has a growing technology sector centred in Toronto, Vancouver, and Waterloo. The country's proximity to the US and the CUSMA free trade agreement make it a strategic hub for North American market access.
Canada actively recruits skilled foreign workers at scale, admitting over 400,000 permanent residents annually. Employers are accustomed to hiring internationally and Express Entry is designed specifically to channel skilled workers into the labour market.
Toronto's MaRS Discovery District and Vancouver's tech ecosystem are growing hubs. SR&ED (Scientific Research and Experimental Development) tax credits offer significant incentives for R&D-intensive businesses. Business incorporation is straightforward and provincial.
