Measuring landAlthough square meters and square feet are the two widely used units for measuring units of a property in India, there are more than dozen other units of measurements locally used across the breadth and length of the country. Even when it comes to these two units of area measurements, while places in the north like Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida measures land and properties in square feet, elsewhere in places like Mumbai and Goa, the most accepted unit of area measurement is square meters. Meanwhile in places of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, they use the local units of area measurement called Nalli and in the Far East it’s Kotha.

The use of different units in the country makes its very difficult for a buyer who is not a local and is not aware of the local area measuring units. There is a very big difference between the units used for land measurement. So it is very important to know the area in the measuring unit you are more comfortable with.

To make things easy for you we have a chart of the key land measurement units that are used to measure land in India:

8 Kanals = 1 acre

Acre is also called quilla or ghumaon

20 marlas = 1 kanal

160 marls = 1 acre

1 marla = 9 square karams

1 karam = 5.5 feet

1 acre = 4 bigas+ 16 biswas (20th part)

1 acre = 4 and 4/5 bigas

1 acre = 96 biswas

1 Hectare = 2.5 Acres

1 Acre = 40 Gunthas

1 Guntha = 121 square yards = 101.17 square meters

1 Guntha = 1089 square feet (33 feet. x 33 feet)

1 Acre = 4840 square yards

1 Acre = 4067.23 square meters

1 Acre = 43,560 square feet

1 square yard = 0.8361 square meter

1 square meter = 1.190 square yards

1 square yard = 9 square feet

1 square meter = 10.76 square feet

1 Katha = 80 square yards

1 Nalli = 240 square yards

1 Bhigha = 1600 square yards

1 Acre = 4800 square yards

* The Roman numeral suffixes at the end of some of the units, e.g. Biswa I and Biswa II, indicate that more than one measure of area exists by the same name in different regions, and are not a part of the unit’s nomenclature.
