The rainy season will soon begin and it’s that time of the year when you need to prepare ahead. For holiday home/ homestay owners, preparing the property to ensure that even during the rains guests have a good time is very important. Here’s what you can do:
Decluttering: This is perhaps the best time to declutter your property. Make a list of the things that are not required for the next 2-3 months and keep them in the store. Ideally there is a room in everybody’s home which becomes a dumping ground for all the unwanted and hardly-used items. Transform this room from a dumping ground into a functional, organized space first before you start dumping things here. Storing things in an organized manner ensures that more items can fit in. If there are items that can be harmed by pests, don’t forget to place some moth balls.
Maintenance: Protecting the interiors of your house from the wrath of the rains should be given priority. Call the contractor or the mason to have a look at your exterior walls for cracks. Ideally water sipping from these exterior cracks can spoil the walls from inside. Even the tiniest of cracks need to be plugged. Additionally, put extra thick door mats at all entry doors to check water and mud stuck on feet from soiling the floors. For door mats, go for the material that can be washed from time to time. Also make sure that the drainage system that takes water out of your property is not clogged. Check the terrace and the roof gutters too for any debris.
Pest control/ mosquito control: The rainy season also means nuisance of pests in general and particularly mosquitoes. Apart from removing all objects that can be breeding places for mosquitoes in the lawn and backyard, make sure that you have installed mosquito/ insect screen on all windows and doors. Today, there are several varieties of screens available in the market, but I would recommend the roller retractable and barrier free retractable because while giving total protection from mosquitoes and insects, they add value and elegance to your home.
Once these are taken care of here are some of the things that you can stock or do to make sure that guests have a good time even during the rains.
1. Keep a couple of mosquito repellant sprays and diffusers in the house. If possible an insect catcher machine can also be kept handy. There are also many mosquito repellent natural oils available in the market. These oils emit a good aroma too and most guests would love them.
2. Don’t forget to keep a couple of umbrellas, raincoats, and windcheaters in the house. This will help guests to venture out instead of remaining stuck indoors.
3. Ensure that you have a couple of indoor games for guests to play. If you have enough space, a table tennis board, or a foosball table can be installed. A couple of card and board games can keep children busy. If you have good novels, coffee table books make space to neatly keep them in a shelf. Many guests would love to read a book watching the rains from inside the house. Watching a classic can also be a good option not only to kill time, but also to help family members bond over a good movie. So keeping DVS of some classics and new movies can be a good idea.
4. Change the menu for the season and make way for some snacks that are best enjoyed in the rainy season. If you have a cook stationed in the property then add a couple of different types of pakoras to the menu. Also stock your kitchen with a couple of different types of cookies and soups. The freezer should also be stocked with ready-to-eats which can either be easily fried or microwaved.
