Tableware or glassware is not only convenient but makes your meal complete. Tableware is used to set a table for eating a meal or for serving food. It is also known as a dinnerware, which includes cutlery and glassware. In Britain, it is also called crockery. Tableware can be made of ceramic, glass, earthenware, porcelain or stoneware and sometimes plastic. Glassware is used for drinking purpose. It is also known as drinkware and is made of mostly glass, steel or copper.

The nature, variety of tableware or glassware varies from culture, religion and cuisine. Most people don’t have the space to stock all kinds of glassware or tableware, but depending on your usage and frequency you could invest accordingly.

Tableware can be categorized into four basic service types – serveware, dinnerware, flatware or silverware and drinkware or glassware. Whether they are used for ordinary days or for special events, there are classes of tableware to suit every occasion.

Serveware – as the name suggests, is used for serving. Serving bowls, platters, gravy boats, salad bowls, dessert bowls, casseroles, soup pots, tea pots and any other dishes that are used to bring food to the table falls under this category. A serving spoon, ladle, pair of tongs or other utensils also comes under this category. Containers used for serving drinks, such as pitchers or carafes are also classified as serveware.

Dinnerware – dinnerware is a type of tableware used to serve individual portions during a meal. Dinnerware consists of a variety of dishes, ranging from the basic plate and bowl to more specialized pieces that are used for specific purposes. It is also known as Chinaware or crockery and is usually made up of ceramic. A formal arrangement of dinnerware depends on the courses of meal served.

Flatware – Flatware includes items such as cutlery and hence is considered the most important type of tableware. They are also known as silverware, which consists of spoons, forks and knives. They may vary in size and shape depending on the variety.

Drinkware – is used to describe any item that can be drunk from. Mugs , cups and glasses come under this category.

Dinnerware include small, big and quater plates, cutlery, tea cups with saucer. Serveware includes serving bowls - big or small, salt and pepper servers

There are two types of glassware –  stemware and  tumbler.

Stemware  – that stands on  stems above the base.

Stemware - martini glass (center), champagne flutes (right) and wine glasses

Martini glass – has a cone-shaped bowl placed upon a stem above a flat base. It is used to serve cocktails.

Wine glass – is used to drink and taste wine. It is further characterized into red wine glasses, white wine glasses and champagne glasses. Selection of a particular wine glass is important as the glass shape plays an important role in wine drinking.

Snifter or brandy glass – is a type of stemware, a short-stemmed glass whose vessel has a wide bottom and a relatively narrow top. It is mostly used to serve aged spirits such as brandy and whiskey.

Champagne coupe or champagne saucer – is a shallow, broad-bowled, stemmed glass. It is not only used for serving champagne but also used to make cocktails like daiquiri, a Spanish cocktail.

Champagne flute – is a stem glass with a tall, narrow bowl. The bowl of a flute may resemble a narrow wine glass. It is most commonly used to serve sparkling wines.

Cordial glass – is an elegant glass and is used to serve expensive after-dinner liqueurs.

Sherry glass – is used for serving aromatic alcoholic beverages such as sherry, port or liqueurs.

Tumbler – flat bottomed drinking glasses

Tumbler - high ball or collins glass, rock glass or low ball, water glasses (from right to left)

Collins glass – is used to serve water, soda and sometimes beer.

Highball or tall glass – similar in shape to Collins glass but smaller in size. It is used for serving cocktails and is interchangeable to Collins glass.

Water glass (utility glass) – elongated tumbler type of glass and usually confused with Collins or highball glass. It is also used to serve juices.

Rock glass or low ball – short tumbler and is also known as old fashioned too. You can use them to serve neat drinks such as whiskey.

Whiskey tumbler – as the name suggests, it is used to serve whiskey.

Shot glass – holds one single measure of alcohol is served to be consumed straight from the glass.  Tequila and vodka shots are some of the popular known shots served.

Beer glass or mug – as the name suggests, it is commonly used to serve beer.

Right to left - beer or mocktial/cocktail glass, martini glass, shot glass, wine glass, water or juice glass and champagne flutes

You may find a lot of fancy tableware or glassware in the market and may sometimes become  tedious or confusing to choose from. Selecting the ware depending on your convenience, usage and budget can help you choose the right kind.
